Convert MP4 to MP3 Online
xFormat converts the soundtrack of any MP4 or other video into an MP3 at 128, 192 or 320 kbps directly in your browser, so the video is never uploaded.
Runs in your browser — files never leave your device.
How it works
Turn a lecture, interview, concert recording or music video into an MP3 you can play anywhere. Pick a bitrate, convert, and download. The video is processed on your own device, so private recordings stay private.
- 1
Select an MP4 (or other video) file.
- 2
Choose MP3 and a bitrate: 128, 192 or 320 kbps.
- 3
Click Extract and download your MP3.
Which MP3 bitrate should you pick?
Bitrate decides both quality and file size. At 128 kbps, speech and podcasts sound fine, and the file is roughly 1 MB per minute. At 192 kbps, music sounds good on most headphones and speakers, at about 1.4 MB per minute. At 320 kbps, you get the highest quality MP3 allows, at about 2.4 MB per minute.
A useful rule: you cannot add quality that the video's own audio does not have. If the source audio is 128 kbps AAC, converting it to 320 kbps MP3 makes the file bigger, not better.
What happens to the video
Only the audio track is kept. The picture is discarded, which is why an MP3 is a fraction of the size of the MP4. Because MP3 is a lossy format, the audio is re-encoded once during conversion. If you want to keep the original audio untouched instead, use the Extract Audio tool and choose M4A.
The audio is decoded by your browser and encoded by a small built-in MP3 encoder (about 300 KB), so there is no big download. Only sources the browser cannot read switch to compatibility mode, a one-time download of about 31 MB.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert MP4 to MP3 without uploading?
Choose the file here and click Extract. The audio is converted inside your browser, so the video never goes to a server.
What bitrate is best for MP3?
192 kbps is a solid default for music, 128 kbps is fine for speech, and 320 kbps gives maximum MP3 quality at a larger size.
How big will my MP3 be?
Roughly 1 MB per minute at 128 kbps, 1.4 MB at 192 kbps and 2.4 MB at 320 kbps.
Can I convert a video from my phone?
Yes, it works in mobile browsers. Keep the video under about 200 MB on a phone.
Does it work with MOV, MKV or WebM videos too?
Yes, other common video formats can be used as the source as well, though some may use the slower compatibility mode.
