Compress PDF (Lossless Cleanup)
xFormat.space shrinks PDFs in your browser by clearing metadata and re-saving the file with compressed object streams, a lossless approach that keeps text selectable and never uploads your document.
Runs in your browser — files never leave your device.
How it works
This tool does a gentle, lossless cleanup rather than aggressive image squeezing. It can shave some size off many PDFs and almost nothing off others, and it shows the exact before and after so you aren't left guessing. Your file is processed locally.
- 1
Drop a PDF onto the page.
- 2
Click Compress PDF.
- 3
Compare the original and new sizes, then download the result if it's smaller.
What it actually does
The tool clears the document's title, author, subject, keywords, creator and producer fields, then saves the file again with object streams turned on, which packs the PDF's internal structure more tightly. It does not re-render pages and it does not downsample or recompress the images inside the PDF. That means text stays selectable and searchable, and appearance does not change at all.
What results to expect
Because images aren't touched, savings depend on what is inside. PDFs with a lot of structural overhead or uncompressed internals can shrink noticeably; PDFs that are mostly photos or scanned pages, which is where most of the weight is, usually shrink very little. Sometimes the file barely changes. The page shows the space saved, and it never reports a negative reduction, so if the number is zero, keep the original.
If you need a big reduction on a scan-heavy PDF, this tool alone won't get you there. Options include rescanning at a lower resolution, exporting the pages as images and compressing those, or using a desktop PDF tool with image downsampling.
One side effect: the cleared metadata fields are removed from the output, which you may like or dislike.
Frequently asked questions
How much can this compress my PDF?
It varies. The tool does lossless cleanup, so some PDFs shrink noticeably and image-heavy ones shrink little or not at all. The page shows the exact size change.
Will compressing make my PDF text unreadable or non-selectable?
No. Pages are not rasterized or re-rendered, so text stays selectable and searchable and the layout is unchanged.
Does it reduce the size of images inside the PDF?
No. It does not downsample or recompress embedded images, which is why scanned or photo-heavy PDFs often barely shrink.
Is my PDF uploaded to compress it?
No. Everything runs in your browser. There is no upload, no sign-up and no watermark.
Does compressing remove my PDF's metadata?
Yes. Title, author, subject, keywords, creator and producer are cleared in the output file.
